Our family-run
business has been breeding exotic birds since 1970. During the
early
years, we bred parakeets, cockatiels, and
canaries on a commercial scale. By 1980
we had expanded to breeding larger hook bills
and soft bills, which included; Caiques,
Conures, Amazons, Macaws, African Greys,
Cockatoos, Rosellas, Grass parakeets (neophemas), Australian
Kings, Crimson-winged parakeets, Toucans, Australian
finches, and Cuban Melodious finches.

In association with Roger Bringas, of Mutations
Unlimited, North Hollywood, California, we have also had experience breeding a large number
of color mutations.

Beginning in the early 1970's, we successfully bred and raised over one thousand Caiques of both varieties, exclusively
for the wholesale pet market. All of our babies were raised utilizing artificial incubation
and hand rearing to ensure a premium quality
companion pet. The caique makes an outstanding pet and is at the top of the
list in this category.
For information on caiques, refer to the 1996 March/April issue of the American Federation of Aviculture's (AFA) bi-monthly journal, the "Watchbird." This issue contains an extensive paper that we authored titled, "The Care & Breeding of Caiques." This paper was originally presented in 1995 at the AFA's National Convention, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Click here to view paper.

In 2003, we discontinued breeding Caiques to concentrate our breeding efforts towards the endangered Cuban Amazon.
Cuban Amazons are
one of the most beautiful of all the Amazon parrots. We were one of
a few private members of the American Zoo and Aquarium Association's
Cuban Amazon Consortium. We breed the Cuban Amazon for the purpose
of establishing and managing a group of Cuban Amazon parrots
to maintain a self-sustaining captive population and contribute
to the preservation of this endangered species. We possess the
U.S. Fish and Wildlife's Captive-bred Wildlife Permit for the
Cuban Amazons, which is required for both parties involved in
any interstate transactions.

Lima’s Exotic Birds is also a grower and collector of the tropical “Plumeria” flowers. Plumerias are indigenous to Mexico, Central America, and throughout the Caribbean islands. In the late 1800’s, Plumerias were introduced to the Hawaiian Islands, where they now flourish in the Hawaiian tropical climate. Plumerias are now also common throughout the South Pacific, Australia, India, and Southeast Asia.
There are over 350 named Plumeria varieties and range in colors from white, yellow, red, pink, orange, maroon, lilac, and rainbows. The varieties vary in flower size/shape and fragrances; from citrus, coconut, gardenia, peaches, rose, etc… Currently, Lima’s Exotic Birds grows over 100 varieties of Plumeria. See our PLUMERIA GALLERY for photographs of our plants and flowers. Plumerias are very easy to grow in warm, sunny climates and are very sensitive to freezing. They are very easy to grow from cuttings, as well as from seeds.
During the spring and summer months, Lima’s Exotic Birds has cuttings and potted plants of various sizes for sale. Cuttings can be safely shipped via the United States Postal Service. Please inquire for our current availability and price list.
